Decay (Dental Caries)

Like many other diseases, decay is caused by bacteria which can live in your teeth. This bacteria loves sugar a by product of the bacteria is acid which causes holes in teeth.

Despite being a completely preventable and treatable disease, a quarter of 5 year olds have tooth decay with an average of 3 or 4 teeth affected.

Tooth decay is the most common cause children aged 5-9 need treatment in hospital

Prevention of decay

Decay will only occur of there is sugar for the bacteria that lives around teeth (plaque) to live off.

Prevention step 1:
Limit the frequency of sugar intakes - particularly snacks between meals

Prevention step 2:
Brush your teeth in the morning and before bed every day with a toothpaste containing fluoride. Brushing removes the bacteria which causes decay (plaque) and the fluoride can harden up any early holes which are starting.

Prevention step 3:
Visit the dentist regularly - we check your teeth for early signs of decay which can be easily treatable.

Management of early decay

At Newcastle Advanced Dentistry we offer state of the art drill free treatments for management of early decay.

Traditionally, where there is early decay spotted between the teeth on x-rays, the only way to access this and clean the tooth is by drilling the decay away. Often, this leaves a hole much bigger than the original decay.

We offer a much less invasive procedure for baby teeth which involves no drilling of the tooth. Using air abrasion, decay can be cleared away and the tooth sealed to prevent new decay developing.
